History of R&B

R&B is a music genre that combines elements of rhythm and bluessoulfunkpophip hop and dance. Famous R&B artists include; Ashanti, Beyonce, Usher, Chris Brown and Drake.

2002

Ashanti released Foolish in January 2002.

The music video follows the narrative and resembles Goodfellas.
Goodfellas is a Gangster Crime film which was released in 1990, directed by Martin Scorsese.

The video begins with a 2 shot of two men sitting in a car discussing a woman. One male claims that he has been trying to 'get with her for a month'. This introduction sets a narrative, which the audience can relate to throughout the music video, so they can easily understand the full story line.

2005
Chris Brown released his first hit, Run It in 2005.

This music video, like Ashanti's focuses on a romantic relationship. The narrative is about two high school students who meet and fall in love, they meet in their high school gym and have a dance off. Like many R&B music videos, various dance routines are incorporated. there is a consistency of Low key lighting throughout the music video, this indicates that they are doing something they shouldn't be, which is later revealed when security guards evacuate them from the premises.

2007
Ciara released like a boy in 2007.

Again this song and music video focuses on relationships. The narrative is about a female who feels that relationships are unfair, that the 'boy' has an advantage. She reverse steh roles and dresses as a stereotypical boy in 2007 would. We are presented with 2 versions of Ciara, a boy version and girl version. They are at conflict throughout. This music video also incorporates a dance routine with back up dancers.

2011
Beyoncé released Dance for You in 2011.

Here we begin to sexualisation of women within music videos, and Mulvey's male gaze, where women dress and act to please men. This is also evident in previous music videos, such as the Pussycat Dolls 'Buttons' in 2006. Beyoncé dances in a similar fashion to the Pussycat Dolls, on a chair. The video is set in a previous era, we can tell this by the old fashioned clothing and props such as traditional sewing machines, fans and radiators. The narrative is about a female who aims to please her significant other, as she is appreciative of him. This narrative of this song and music video like the many others is based on love, and a romantic relationship.
