1975- Robbers Analysis

The music video of 1975- Robbers illustrates a love story. The lead singer of The 1975, Matt Healy and a brunette girl are presented in a relationship. The couple become involved in a criminal act, where they rob a convenience store, in order to feed, what it seems to be their alcohol and drug habits. We see the pair openly consume drugs and alcohol, in public places as well as private places. The use of drugs and alcohol are a conventional aspect of the indie genre.



Most filming is carried out in locations that are outside, thereupon the lighting used is generally natural lighting. However at one point in the music video, the couple are seen in a bedroom, indicating a intimate theme, as the bedroom is a very private place. There is low- key lighting within this scene with a red filter. The red filter connotes romance, as the colour red is generally associated with romance and love, however sometimes danger. Both romance an danger are themes within the music video.
 

The locations used within the music video include skate parks, abandoned houses, cinemas and desolate streets. All of these places are cheap to visit and easily accessible. This promotes a theme of realism, which allows the audience to relate to the video. Locations such as skate parks are used because they appeal to the target audience, as many indie fans attend public places such as skate parks.



The costume worn by the two protagonists are conventional of the indie genre. Leather jackets, ripped jeans, and dark coloured clothing is worn by the male protagonist. He also has long hair, which is a common aspect of indie. The woman wears revealing clothing, such as cropped tops,and bralettes which is conforms to the stereotypes of women. The costume utilized within the music video connote rebellion and the indie genre.






The cinematography within the music video is basic and generally consists of medium shots, close-ups and two shots. The shaky camera use creates a theme of realism. The two shot of the couple puts a focus on the relationship between the two protagonists, demonstrating that their relationship is a significant aspect of the narrative.






During the bridge of the song, the scene cuts. This is where we hear gunshots, which explain an earlier injury. We see a bloody hand wrapped up in a bandage. The gunshots and injury connote danger, which is conventional of the indie genre.








The music video conforms to the codes and conventions of the indie genre. Themes such as the use of drugs and alcohol, the costume, hair and makeup, tattoos, violence and the use of guns, the locations used and in particular the Narrative all conform to the aspects of the indie genre.
