Production Diary 6 - Business Purposes

In terms of business purposes, music videos are made in order to promote the sales of a single or an album that features the single. Music videos also promote the artist/ band who created the single.

Sites such as YouTube and Vimeo and Itunes distribute music videos. Those who upload the music video to these sites make their profit from advert revenue. On average they earn £1.28p every time the video has been viewed 1000 times. Of course bigger artists such as Beyonce make most money as they achieve many views. Beyonces Formation has been viewed 77,491, 108 times working out to nearly 100,000 profit just from views on YouTube.

Smaller artists create music videos to promote the sales of their single and album. This is how smaller artists make their money rather than profit via YouTube.

Channels such as 4Music, MTV and VH1 show music videos, typically the most famous singles of the week/month/ year. This promotes the artist/band, single, album as do the videos on YouTube.

Synergy is maintained between the music video itself, live performances, album covers, posters and other aspects of the promotion process.
In some music videos performance is featured. This gives the audience an insight to the experience of watching the band/artist live.

In some cases synergy is recognised within other media texts such as film. Pharrell Williams' single 'Happy' was featured in the famous DreamWorks film Despicable Me. Within the music video for Happy, characters from the film feature in the video, promoting the film. The film promotes Pharrell William and single in the same way.
